Modern Saltbox
The Modern Saltbox project transformed a 1970s cottage into a high-performance, eco-friendly modern farmhouse. We retained the home’s original charm—like the plank-and-beam bedroom and a large brick hearth—while making substantial upgrades for style and efficiency.
For sustainability, we extended the hearth and added a Morso wood burning stove, installed radiant floor heating on the first floor, and upgraded upstairs with Runtal radiators. Each room got a Mitsubishi mini-split unit for efficient heating and cooling. This allowed us to replace the old oil boiler with a 93% efficient propane boiler and on-demand hot water system.
Throughout the house, insulation was improved, floors refinished, walls opened up to improve flow, and the entire interior was updated with fresh paint and trim.
Outside, we installed a state of the art solar tracker - a large solar panel on a single steel stand that tracks the sun, just like a sunflower. New, high-performance sliding doors replaced older, leaky ones. The old, rickety back deck was rebuilt with rough-cut white oak for durability. No chemicals & no refinishing.
The main bathroom became a standout feature, with modern touches like two Velux roof windows flooding the upstairs with light. An infrared sauna was installed in the sun room downstairs adding to the spa-like features.
Our Design Director designed and installed permaculture gardens with fruit trees, berry bushes, and flowering vines, giving the property a productive, homestead feel.
This renovation focused on eco upgrades and brought new life to the cottage, blending modern efficiency with rustic charm.
