Hudson River Manse

Historic Restoration

A shining example of Italianate architecture, parts of this c1850 Hudson River Manse have been immaculately and carefully restored by our Design and Build teams.

The incredible wraparound porch with chamfered corners was undoubtedly built for gazing at the mighty Hudson River, when weekenders were brought upstate by steamboat.

Years of harsh exposure to elements and deferred maintenance left the house with a major need for repairs to historic cornice work and trims. We started with putting on a new, insulated, white membrane roof with copper flashing into the brickwork to address the root problem and then we set to work detailing and recreating the historic decorative moldings.

Our team of carpenters were also tasked with the challenge of seamlessly matching the original kitchen cabinets - a deVOL inspired chef’s dream.

In a worse state of affairs, the carriage house required a new foundation, and structural reinforcement in addition to general restoration, again matching historic siding and trim work. We also added a small side porch, a second floor dormer off the back and new, energy efficient, historically accurate windows, all in preparation for future conversion to an accessory dwelling. Real wooden garage doors, a new metal roof and copper gutters were the proverbial cherry on top of this cutie.

Even sweeter is the shy little smoke house hiding behind the carriage house. We repointed the historic brickwork, and completely reroofed and sided the petit structure with cedar shingles and painted trims on its tiny gables.

This project is a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship required to breathe new life into a historic property while preserving its storied past.
