Athens Historic
To restore a charming home in Athens’ historic district, CB Design / Build undertook a meticulous renovation that balanced architectural preservation with thoughtful modern upgrades. Originally described as “a wreck,” the home underwent an extensive transformation, preserving architectural heritage while crafting a space perfectly suited for modern life.
Under the design leadership of Andrew Personette, the team restored original elements such as the home’s floors, the grandiose pocket doors, and the living room’s marble hearth with impeccable craftsmanship and attention to detail. The near-collapsing staircase posed a unique challenge, requiring new handmade spindles that faithfully matched the originals.
Energy efficiency was also a priority, with foam insulation and mini-split HVAC systems discreetly incorporated to ensure the home was as comfortable as it was timeless.
The exterior was stripped of later additions to reveal the home’s original form. The team painstakingly researched porches of the era to design & build a brand new one with all the details honoring Athen’s historic aesthetic. Half of the house was perched on a rock ledge, to stabilize it, the build team had to lift it up and use reclaimed brick to rebuild the crumbling foundation.
Inside, modern updates were seamlessly integrated into the historic framework. Bathrooms were outfitted with updated fixtures and striking tile work, while the new addition—housing a primary suite, kitchen, and bedroom—was finished with reclaimed oak flooring that echoed the home’s historic character.
