CB Design / Build partners with Basilica Hudson to bring the Net Zero Campus Project to life.
When the team at Basilica Hudson set out to renovate their iconic arts and performance space, they had an ambitious goal in mind - to create a true net-zero facility that would serve as a model for sustainable development in the region.
With the help of a grant from NYSERDA, Basilica embarked on a multi-phase project that would breathe new life into their historic buildings while dramatically reducing their environmental impact.
That’s where we come in.
CB Design / Build served as the green build partner to bring the Net Zero Campus Project to life.
PHASE 1
The first phase tackled the West Wing building, the 4300 sq ft entryway to the Basilica complex. The roof was removed and replaced with a highly insulated new structure, while the walls were rebuilt and also super insulated. A new slab was poured, and the exterior was refreshed with modern siding and roofing.
PHASE 2
With the West Wing buttoned up, the CB Build team turned their attention to the main Basilica building. The entire existing roof was topped with new framing and insulated with high R-value spray foam to dramatically reduce energy demand, improving the enormous structure's energy efficiency.
PHASE 3
The real showstopper was the installation of the 30+ custom-made Marvin windows. Painstakingly crafted to replicate the original historic ones, these wood windows with aluminum clad exteriors, will last a lifetime. These massive, functional units stand up to 14 feet tall and 6 feet wide, flooding the interior with natural light while maintaining the building's timeless aesthetic.
The energy transformation will be complete once SunCommon installs the new 150kW solar array, in addition to the existing 50kW. The entire facility will run on electric heat pumps, powered by the sun.
As Basilica Hudson continues to serve as a hub for the artistic community in the Hudson Valley, the newly transformed campus will serve as a replicable model for green construction and energy use – combining the arts, historic preservation, and sustainability.
What began as a bold vision to create a net-zero campus has now become a reality, a shining example of what's possible.
Cheers to the future of green building!
